How long in advance should you make Mary Berry's Victorian Christmas Cake?

My Mary Berry recipe book contains a recipe for a Victorian Christmas Cake, of which she says "unlike traditional Christmas cakes, this mixture produces a light, succulent and moist cake". She tells you to make her classic Christmas cake well in advance, but she doesn't say anything about when to make the Victorian one. Should it also be made a couple of months in advance, a week or even as close to when you want to eat it as possible?

Yes it is ok to make it a couple of months in advance and store it in an air-tight container wrapped in kitchen foil.

Christmas Miniatures For Your Dollhouse

When December 25 rolls around, there tends to be a flurry of activity in any household across the country. As the Christmas feeling sets in, residents raid the attacks of their homes and venture into stores to purchase everything they need for the festive season; as the decorating of the house begins. For many, it does not feel like Christmas until the tinsel is wrapped around the banner, the holly wreath is on the front door and the Christmas tree and fairy lights are twinkling in the window. The Christmas spirit comes alive around you with decorations.

It may seem trivial, but if you own a dollhouse, the idea may well stem to the dollhouse itself. There can be nothing more charming and festivity inspiring than seeing the usual decorations and sparkles honoring the Christmas season, but played out in miniature within a dollhouse. Decorations that are familiar and treasured suddenly take on a new significance when seen gracing the ornate beauty of a dollhouse, giving the entire Christmas season a new dimension. Quite simply, when it is so cheap and easy to do so, some may argue any owner of a dollhouse would be crazy not to decorate their treasure for the Christmas season!

A stunningly decorated dollhouse is not just a novelty for the indulgent dollhouse owner. If done properly - and anyone with a dollhouse is a person used to doing things properly, focusing on the minute details - then a Christmas theme decorated dollhouse can be a Christmas decoration in itself. Rather than a standard centerpiece for Christmas dinner, your beautifully festive dollhouse could take the place if small enough - if not, used as a feature decoration in the living room or beside the front door as a picture of a charmingly picturesque Christmas charm.

Achieving this adorable idea is, thanks to the wonders of the internet and some specialist high street stores, is simpler now than it has ever been. Whatever your budget, taste, style and preferences; the answers are now available to buy. It has, quite simply, never been easier to bring a little Christmas cheer to your own dollhouse as well as your main living area.

What you do and what you purchase is up to you. It is possible to purchase entire kits, which allow a full decoration of every room and outside area of a dollhouse of almost any size. These tend to include all the decorations you would use for yourself and your own home. These include wreaths, tinsel, baubles, Christmas trees (it is possible to even purchase real, off-cuts of actual trees), fairy lights, Christmas card holders, cards to purchase to put on mantelpieces, display reindeer and fake snow. These sets tend to be themed - such as Victorian Christmas, in keeping with the origins of the dollhouse - and come as a complete packaged set.

There is also the option, however, of buying just what you feel you need. All of the items that are mentioned above can be bought separately, and this is often cheaper than purchasing a set; with a set, you pay a premium for the convenience.

Whichever road you wish to take, you can now add a Christmas cheer to your very own dollhouse and have a festive decoration no one will ever forget.

Description

Christmas had been a much neglected holiday until the Victorians revived its beloved traditions - trimming the tree, hanging the mistletoe, decking the hall...and celebrating it all in songs called carols. A Victorian Christmas offers a delightful assortment of the popular carols of the time, from those still well-known today, including The First Noel, God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen, Greensleeves, The Holly and the Ivy and The Wassail Song; to a treasure trove of lesser known gems including The Cherry Tree Carol, The Carnal and the Crane and My Dancing Day. Featuring the lyrical hammered dulcimer (or, as the Victorians called it, the "piano harp") of Robin Petrie in sparkling arrangements which also include different combinations of piano, strings, harp and guitar.

Description

Here are two holiday mysteries set in remote, snow-covered regions of Victorian Britain–where the nights are indeed silent but all is not calm, and where some will sleep in eternal peace.A CHRISTMAS BEGINNINGWhile spending Christmas on the island of Anglesey off the coast of Wales, Superintendent Runcorn of Scotland Yard, a lonely bachelor, stumbles upon the lifeless body of the vicar’s younger sister in the village churchyard. Everyone insists that only a stranger to the island could have committed the heinous crime, but the evidence proves otherwise. Intending to uncover the identity of the ruthless killer, Runcorn never dreams that the case may also, miraculously, open the door to a new future for himself.A CHRISTMAS GRACEWith Christmas just around the corner, Thomas Pitt’s sister-in-law, Emily Radley, is suddenly called from London to be with her dying aunt on the western coast of Ireland. Emily soon discovers that painful memories of an unsolved murder haunt the lonely Irish town and sets out to unmask the culprit. When a lone shipwreck survivor washes up onshore, he brings with him not only the key to solving the terrible crime but the opportunity for the townspeople to make peace with the past–and with one another.

...At the sound of footsteps along the hall Miss Terry looked up from the letter which she was reading for the sixth time. "Of course I would not see him," she said, pursing her lips into a hard line. "Certainly not!" A bump on the library door, as from an opposing knee, did duty for a knock. "Bring the box in here, Norah," said Miss Terry, holding open the door for her servant, who was gasping under the weight of a packing-case. "Set it down on the rug by the fire-place. I am going to look it over and burn up the rubbish this evening." "Yes'm," said Norah, as she set down the box with a thump. She stooped once more to pick up something which had fallen out when the cover was jarred open. It was a pink papier angel, such as are often hung from the top of Christmas trees as a crowning symbol. Norah stood holding it between thumb and finger, staring amazedly. Who would think to find such a bit of frivolity in the house of Miss Terry! Her mistress looked up from the fire, where the bit of writing was writhing painfully, and caught the expression of Norah's face. "What have you there?" she asked, frowning, as she took the object into her own hands. "The Christmas Angel!" she exclaimed under her breath. "I had quite forgotten it." Then as if it burned her fingers she thrust the little image back into the box and turned to Norah brusquely. "There, that's all. You can go now, Norah," she said. "Yes'm," answered the maid. She hesitated. "If you please'm, it's Christmas Eve." "Well, I believe so," snapped Miss Terry, who seemed to be in an awful mood, "What do you want?" Norah flushed; but she was hardened to her mistress's manner. "Only to ask if I may go out for a little while to see the decorations and hear the singing." ...

Description

Victorian Carols - Christmas Songs and Music from Victorian England. The Victorians almost re-invented Christmas trees and carol singing after decades of neglect of our major festival. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert led the changing style of Christmas as it became a real family occasion for the first time, with presents around the tree and carol singing in the home and on the street. This recording assembles a variety of Victorian Christmas music from the sounds of street musicians to drawing room songs, from mechanical instruments and organs to bells and church choirs. This varied selection of music reflects both the pious and robust sides to the Victorian musical style. Vigorous carols such as God rest you merry gentlemen (track 1) mix with gentle ones such as Sleep, holy babe (track 13) and the beautiful and famous See amid the winter's snow (track 12). Adam's powerful Cantique de Noël (Song of Christmas - track 4) contrasts with Liszt's quiet arrangement of In Dulci Jubilo (track 10). The music of Bach and Handel was a feature of Victorian music making in the choral societies of towns and cities throughout the land and can be heard here in Jesu, Joy (track 16), In dulci jubilo (track 22) and in an all-time favourite Christmas piece, the Hallelujah Chorus (track 21). The atmosphere of the Victorian Christmas drawing room is recreated here in sentimental songs from around the piano. What shall we sing at Christmas? (track 7) draws together several seasonal songs while the Song of the Robin Redbreast (track 9) may have brought a tear to the Victorian sentimental eye! Music boxes (including the famous Leipzig-made Polyphons) could be heard in the home or in the public bar, to which the carol singers (singing the Wassail Song - track 17) and slightly tipsy musicians might repair after a night of music-making and revelry around the town. In Landlord fill the Flowing Bowl (track 18) the musicians make it sound as though the landlord might have a few problems serving drinks accurately himself!

Description

Christmas fascinated the great Victorian novelist Charles Dickens, and to Victorian England, Dickens was Christmas. Following the enormous success in 1843 of A Christmas Carol, Dickens wrote several other Christmas books, sketches, and short stories, and the holiday plays a part in many of his novels. Dickens' public, it seemed, couldn't get enough of his depictions of the season. This beautifully illustrated anthology contains the entire text of A Christmas Carol as well as excerpts from Dickens’ other writings that vividly describe houses decked in greenery and lighted candles, mistletoe in the hall and holly wreaths on the door, and lavish, waistcoat-popping dinners. Authentic recipes for 19th-century treats like plum pudding, mince pies, and gingerbread men allow readers to pop a few buttons of their own. Packed with delightful seasonal illustrations, including many original Dickens illustrations, this lovingly compiled book celebrates the Victorian Christmas in all its warmth and charm.
