DIY: Tile Flooring In The Room

Americans generally reserve tile flooring in the kitchen or bathroom. But if you've ever spent time on a farm Mexico, to know the profound pleasure of walking barefoot on exotic beautiful tiles in an area not intended for household or water dripping out of the shower.

My husband and I Honeymoon in San Miguel de Allende, in a villa with Saltillo tile floors. When we bought a house last year with some threadbare carpet in the living room, we started to ask, what prevents us from re-create that here?

At first we looked at the color of terra cotta tiles, with the idea of bringing our honeymoon in our house into a replica as accurate as possible. Honestly, I think we would have liked that. Those were the most romantic days of our lives, then everything.

But we live in Portland, Oregon, where the rain falls and the grass grows green and it seemed a little out of place. We wanted a tile floor that was reference to Mexico, but also the honor of Portland. You know, Be Here Now.

We turn to natural stone tiles, and fell in love again. We chose a random mosaic pebble-sized slices in a shade of green called "Taipei" (after the capital of Taiwan), which reminded us all the world of stream beds to take walks in the mountains of Oregon.

Here's a quick tutorial DIY tile floors, based on our experience. We have been walking through our room gravel for six months now, and I swear I've never felt such peace in a non-holiday home. Married happiness, or simply one word damn fine? A little of both, if we say so, ourselves.

1. Make sure the floor is clean. Get on your hands and knees and scrub basically. Dust, oil, wax or grease will prevent the tile adhesive properly.

2. Work from the center as you plan your design. You want any cut tiles around the edges of the wall. (Ideally, you want to cut boxes at each end of the room to be the same size, but with our stone mosaics that did not have to worry about this.)

3. Place all the tiles throughout the first. When ready to do all the tile cut, go to hire a professional tile cutter. Seriously. I will not name names, but certain someone who I promised to love through sickness and health, so thought it might reduce pictures of yourself with your circular saw, and basically, long story short, we had to order another batch of tiles. Live and learn!

4. Pebble tile grout is a long time, I will not lie. It is also a bit difficult. This advice is important: STAMP BEFORE PEBBLE TILE GROUT. Because the stones have a natural finish that absorb the grout. Insert frowny face here. But if you put together the pieces (once the glue has dried) ready, no absorption. Insert smiley face.

5. Cover the entire piece with grout. Gulp. Wait 20 minutes. Wipe with a damp sponge until it is fairly new. Hey perfectionist, not so hard to clean grout between the stones disappears!

6. Let the tile floor with grout to dry for 24 hours. For the first of those hours, go for a drink, you two. You deserve it.

7. Seal.

8. Hi honey, I'm home? You can leave your hat on, but please leave your shoes at the door.
